DESCRIPTION

Med Biosciences Cary-Blair Fecal Transport Medium is a semi-solid, non-nutritive used for the collection, preservation, and recovery of enteric bacteria pathogens in stool specimens and rectal swabs.

The medium is used for the transportation of clinical specimens suspected to contain enteric pathogens, including Shigella, Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, Yersinia pestis, and Escherichia coli O157: H7. In general, Cary-Blair Medium is a transport medium for Gram negative and anaerobic organisms.

Cary-Blair medium is a nonnutritive balanced salt solution containing inorganic phosphates to provide buffering capability, sodium chloride and calcium chloride to provide essential ions that help maintain osmotic balance. Sodium thioglycolate provides a reduced environment, and agar helps in providing anaerobic environment. Phenol red is added as a pH indicator, which changes its color to yellow when the medium is acidified by the action of viable bacteria. The medium is recommended for maintaining the viability of Gram negative and anaerobic organisms during the transport to the laboratory.

Our Ready-to-use medium is provided in pre-labeled screwcap polypropylene (cryogenic, leak-proof, shatter-proof, transparent with engraved graduation marks, conical bottom, sterile, RNase/DNase-free, and can be centrifuged) tubes containing 2 mL or 5 mL of Cary-Blair medium without (CBT01-2ML/or 5ML) or with phenol red (Cat. No. CBT02-2ML/or 5ML). Tube Dimensions: Internal: 94 x Ø14.8 mm, External: 95 x Ø 15.9 mm (Hold 10 mL).

We also supply the Cary-Blair Medium in a collection kit format. Each collection kit (in a peel-pouch) consists of two sterile components: a pre-labeled polypropylene tube filled with 2 mL or 5 mL of the transport medium and a specimen collection iSwab™ which has a soft brush-like tip flocked with soft nylon microfibers. iSwabs™ are High quality Nylon Flocked Swabs that are entirely made in Med Biosciences Manufacturing facility in Bloomington Illinois USA.

We use special flocking technology granting optimum sample collection and subsequent analysis.

Swabs are made from high quality USA-made medical grade raw materials (Nylon Fiber, ABS, & Adhesive) that are proven for not interfering with subsequent molecular and microbial analysis.

The swab tip is flocked with special soft nylon microfibers to maximize the adsorption capacity of microbial particles and high releasing capacity of the collected sample to the transfer medium with the least entrapment of particles in the swab.

Our iSwab™ has a molded breakpoint at 80 mm from the tip of the swab.

Swab dimensions: 6.0 mm tip width, 6.0 mm tip thickness, 20.0 mm tip length, 80 mm breakpoint, 2.5 mm rod width, 130.0 mm rod length, 150.0 mm total length.

Each swab is individually wrapped in a peel paper/plastic pouch.

Certified sterilization of each batch of the packaged swabs.

MEDIUM COMPOSITION:

Cary-Blair Medium is composed of 0.11% Na₂HPO₄ (Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate), 0.15% HSCH₂COONa (Sodium Thioglycolate), 0.5% NaCl (Sodium Chloride), 0.009% CaCl₂ (Calcium Chloride), and 0.5% Agar, pH 8.4 ± 0.1. We provide our medium with or without 0.0003% Phenol red pH indicator.

Our Cary-Blair medium is produced under highest manufacturing standards. It is formulated from highly pure molecular-grade chemicals in autoclaved 18.2 mega Ω-cm DNase-RNase-free deionized water.

The medium is sterilized by autoclaving and is negative for microbial growth after 48 hours at 37ᴼC.

Each batch of our Cary-Blair medium is extensively tested to maintain viability of different strains of anaerobes, and fastidious bacteria, known inocula of ATCC type culture and clinically significant microorganisms according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards institute (CLSI), M40-A guidelines.

Each batch of the medium is also tested for stability and sterility.

PACKAGING:

Medium alone without swab: 100 tubes containing 2 mL or 5 mL of Cary-Blair medium are racked in one carton box. 4,6, 8, or 12 boxes are packaged in one large carton (400 to 1200 tubes)

Medium kit with swab: each kit contains 1 individually wrapped swab, and 1 tube (2 mL or 5 mL medium) both packaged together in a peel-pouch. 50 kits in one resealable bag. 10 bags (500 kits) in one carton.

Minimum order: 100 medium tubes, or 100 kit (medium + swab)
