DESCRIPTION
Med Biosciences Liquid Amies Collection and Transport (LACT™) System is intended for the collection and transport of clinical specimens containing aerobes, anaerobes, and fastidious bacteria from the collection site to the testing laboratory.
Liquid Amies medium is a nonnutritive balanced salt solution containing inorganic phosphates to provide buffering capability, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride to provide essential ions that help maintain osmotic balance. Sodium thioglycolate provides a reduced environment. It is recommended for maintaining the viability of aerobic, anaerobic, and fastidious bacteria during the transport to the laboratory.
LACT™ System is supplied in a collection kit format. Each collection kit (in a peel-pouch) consists of two sterile components: a pre-labeled polypropylene screwcap tube (cryogenic, leak-proof, shatter-proof and can be centrifuged) with conical shaped bottom filled with 1 mL of Liquid Amies transport medium and a specimen collection iSwab™ which has a tip flocked with soft nylon microfibers. The swabs are provided in two different tip sizes to accommodate various specimen types (nose, throat, vagina, and skin wounds).
Two collection system configurations are available:
LACT1™ System (Cat. No. LACT001-OS-1ML) containing 1 mL of Liquid Amies transport medium and a regular size swab tip that is flocked with soft Nylon Microfibers (iSwab™ Cat. No. OPN-001).
LACT2™ System (Cat. No. LACT002-NP-1ML) containing 1 mL of Liquid Amies transport medium and a flexible mini-tip size swab that is flocked with soft Nylon Microfibers (iSwab™ Cat. No. NPN-001). Please see the table.

iSwabs are High quality Nylon Flocked Swabs that are entirely made in Med Biosciences Manufacturing facility in Bloomington Illinois USA.
We use special flocking technology granting optimum sample collection and subsequent analysis.
Swabs are made from high quality USA-made medical grade raw materials (Nylon Fiber, ABS, & Adhesive) that are proven for not interfering with subsequent molecular and microbial analysis.
The swab tip is flocked with special soft nylon microfibers to maximize the adsorption capacity of microbial particles and high releasing capacity of the collected sample to the transfer medium with the least entrapment of particles in the swab.
Each swab is individually wrapped in a peel paper/plastic pouch.
Certified sterilization of each batch of the packaged swabs.
COMPOSITION OF AMIES MEDIUM:

Liquid Amies is produced under highest manufacturing standards. It is formulated from highly pure molecular-grade chemicals in autoclaved 18.2 mega Ω-cm DNase-RNase-free deionized water.
Our Amies Liquid Medium can be used for transporting samples of aerobic, anaerobic, fastidious, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma and fungal cultures, as well as PCR testing. The liquid medium is also suitable for transport of biopsy or small tissue samples for culture.
Liquid Amies Medium is sterilized by autoclaving and filtration using 0.22 µm filter. It is a clear, colorless liquid and is negative for microbial growth after 48 hours at 37ᴼC.
Each batch of our Amies liquid medium is extensively tested to maintain viability of different strains of aerobes, anaerobes, and fastidious bacteria, known inocula of ATCC type culture and clinically significant microorganisms according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards institute (CLSI), M40-A guidelines.
Each batch of the medium is also tested for stability and sterility.
USING PROCEDURE
Collect patient samples using the provided iSwab™.
Place each swab specimen in the tube containing Amies Transport medium and cut off the swab shaft portion from the breakpoint.
Replace the cap and tighten the tube completely.
Send specimens to the laboratory as soon as possible.
Upon arrival at the laboratory, remove the swab from the transport medium with forceps.
Apply the swab in accordance with accepted microbiological technique to plates containing appropriate media for culture.
Incubate plated media using proper microbiological procedures for cultivation of the suspected organisms.
Observe for acceptable growth and colonial morphology within 48-72 hours.
Important Notes:
In the lab, transported clinical samples are preferably processed within 2 h of collection to maintain optimum organism viability.
If immediate delivery or processing is delayed, then specimens should be refrigerated at 2–8ᴼC or stored at room temperature (20–25ᴼC) and processed within 48 h, except for Neisseria gonorrhoeae cultures which should be processed within 24 h.
Independent scientific studies on swab transport systems have shown that the viability of certain bacteria is superior at refrigerated temperatures compared with room temperature.

Each kit of LACT1 and LACT2 System contains 1 individually wrapped swab, and 1 tube (1 mL medium) both packaged together in a peel-pouch. 50 kits in one resealable bag. 10 bags (500 kits) in one carton.
